The conceptual framework of the Metaverse is ever more dependent on the support of endpoint computing. This is expected to inject vitality into the market for data centers and drive the growth of micro-servers and edge computing. At the same time, servers will see an increase in DRAM content per box and a further upgrade in their storage hardware. In particular, SSDs and HDDs that offer a faster write speed will be targeted for adoption.
Also, hyperscale data centers represent a rapidly expanding share of the ITAD market as the pandemic persists. Currently, North America and China are where the build-out of hyperscale data centers is mainly taking place. Activities in these two major regional markets are bringing about a huge wave of server replacement demand, thereby injecting strong growth momentum into the ITAD market in the future.
The development of DDR5 solutions is being closely watched as the DRAM market undergoes its generational transition. In the server market, there is less sensitivity to the production cost of a whole system. This means that even with a price premium, DDR5 solutions will make relatively rapid progress in gaining adoption support from server CPU platforms. TrendForce believes that DDR5 solutions for servers will gradually advance to the mass production stage and replace the existing DDR4 counterparts in 2022. At this year’s Compuforum, TrendForce will also provide in-depth analyses of the DDR5 adoption timelines of the other major application segments such as PCs and smartphones.
